Karen Harrod is an artist and graphic designer who earned her Bachelor of
Arts in Graphic Design from the University of Central Florida. She served from 1975-79 as the award-winning editor of The
Florida Naturalist, the magazine of the Florida Audubon Society, a publication she later rejoined (1992-1995) as director
of art and advertising. While editor of The Florida Naturalist, Karen’s paintings and illustrations appeared frequently
in the publication. She was hired to illustrate a now-famous guide to turtles, Jack Rudloe’s Time of the Turtle,
published by Alfred A. Knopf.
From 1983 until 1985, Karen was editor of Zink Publishing, Inc.’s magazines in
Florida including Office Guide to Orlando and Discover Orlando. In 1985, Karen was retained to paint a triptych
of Florida wildlife that was displayed for many years in the front lobby of the Park Center building in Maitland Center.
Since 1985, Karen has increased her
proficiency in both watercolor painting of natural Florida, and in graphic design. Her original artwork was displayed throughout
Orlando in 1994 as the signature design for the Dick Batchelor Run for the Children. She was the designer of Arnie!,
a biography of Arnold Palmer that was written by former The Orlando Sentinel Sports Editor Larry Guest, and the cookbook Fish
In A Flash, both published by Tribune Publishing Company.
Karen was co-owner of Harrod Miller Communications, a
consulting firm whose services included publication writing, design and production; logo and packaging design; and research.
Clients of Harrod Miller Communications have included the Walt Disney World Co.; The Orlando Sentinel; Tribune Publishing
Co.; Hubbard Construction Company; the Greater Orlando Chamber of Commerce; the Orlando Area Sports Commission; and Winter
